10 Thursday, October 27, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Groups offer tips for cutting utility bills By Cindy Harger Kansan staff writer As winter approaches, its icy fingers begin reaching into pockets and drawing out money in the form of utility bills. Local apartment owners, leasing companies and energy services are willing to help by giving money-saving tips on how to conserve energy. Sheryl Lemesay, owner of West Hills Apartments, 1012 Emery Road, distributes energy-savings materials. "It doesn't seem like people here have had much experience with running a house." Lemesay said. "After a month of winter, they sometimes come running into the office because they are worried The list emphasizes using inside storm windows. Tenants can seal windows with plastic and electrical tape to keep out drafts. She also suggested putting deflectors on ceiling vents so the heat flows more directly into the room. She said deflectors could be purchased cheaply at hardware stores. about their bills. They don't realize what is available to them to help save money." Mastercraft Management employees suggest that cost-and-energy conscious tenants set thermostats at 70 degrees and leave them there. *Keeping the thermostat at one setting is not as costly. A Miami Snaper mastercraft employee uses an EZ-Control light Gauge on her Power Window. "Heating and cooling is the number one use of energy in a home," said Lanie Griffin, KPI employee. "It can cost you three to five percent money for any few degrees you change the temperature." Other energy saving suggestions: ■ avoid frequent opening and closing of doors. ■ don't heat or cool areas not being used. ■ hang insulated drapery and open the drapes during the day to let in sunlight, and close them at night. Other energy saving suggestions Griffin said the second greatest use of energy was heating water. She suggested taking showers instead of baths. WHALES Continued from p. 1 "We feel very good about it," said Rear Adm. Sigmund Petersen of NOAA. "The cooperation has just been fantastic. The Soviets came in here with a very positive attitude and went to work immediately." On Tuesday, the Americans moved the huge mammals around a shoal that had stymied program for three days. Eskimos with chain saws cut a detour in the ice so the whales could swim around the shallow water they had refused to pass. When the Eskimos started cutting the air holes, the whales "followed the water right to the end. They like that deeper water." Petersen said. Working in the other direction, the Soviet icebreakers reduced to rubble the ice ridge standing between the whales and open water. The ridge, formed by colliding ice masses, was made of ice blocks as big as small houses. The whales, which normally migrate to the Southern California coast in the winter, were discovered off Alaska's northern coast three weeks ago, the ice closing in around them and leaving them only a few small breathing holes. "The whales seemed to be doing fine," Petersen said. "It's like they expected something to be happening. Everything seems to be coming together." miles to open water without surfacing for air. the whales could not swim the four The icebreakers — the Admiral Makarov and the Arseniev — began working shortly after their arrival Tuesday, flying the flags of the Soviet Union and the United States as a sign of cooperation between the nations. The ships had been returning to their home port of Vladivostok when they were diverted, said Alexander and chief officer and second in command.
