- [Jack] Hi everyone, this is Jack Freeze with the Big 7 Game of the Week. Kansas vs. Kansas State. The Jayhawks may get a chance to meet a Wildcat in person today as the Kansas State mascot is brought in to lend his snarling support to the underdogs in today's game. This is the 50th renewal of gridiron meetings between these two schools and past performances mean little when this rivalry flares each autumn. Today's game is at Manhattan, home of Kansas State. A burst of cheering from the Kansas State crowd greets the Wildcats as they come on the field. Kansas State staffed mainly with Sophomores and Juniors has won only 1 game, lost 5 this season. In the backfield, Veryl Switzer and Carl Volden, #49, team up with quarterback, Carl Albacher to see what they can do about improving that record. But suddenly another big cheer goes up and the favored Jayhawks pour onto the field. Kansas comes into this game with 5 victories, only 1 loss. That to the powerful Oklahoma Sooners. Running star Charlie Hoag is an All-American candidate. Kansas fullbacks are Frank Sabatini, #32, and Marv Kinnith. Running the Kansas show is quarterback, Jerry Robertson. Now it's time for the toss of the coin and Kansas captains Charlie Hoag, #21, and Oliver Spencer head for midfield. Coming to meet them are the Kansas State co-captains from left to right, Carl Volden, Ed Stahurra, and Dick Towers. Referee Ronald Gibbs handles the introductions. In the minute remaining before the kick-off here is a fine point about football described by Bob Carson. - [Bob] Uh oh. What goes on there? Well those who know football know this signal means "Illegal interference with a pass receiver." It's fair enough to try and intercept the ball, but the defending man must not interfere with the receiver. If he does, the pass will be ruled complete. Those who know gasoline, know that the most important elements in a motor fuel are the high-test fractions. 1 gives you quick starting. Another, fast engine warm-up. Another, rapid acceleration. And still another, full power in the straightaway. In Phillips 66 gasoline, you get a blend of these valuable high-test elements. Controlled according to the climate and season, so that you get top performance, summer or winter. Get it at stations where you see this orange and black "66" shield. - [Jack] Now it's almost kick-off time. The Jayhawks huddle around their coach, Jules Sikes. They won the toss and will receive. The crowd tenses forward as the teams take to the field and we're ready to go. Kansas State kicking off, and there goes the ball high in the air, end over end, riding deep into Kansas territory, way back, in and out of the end zone for a touchback. And Kasnsas will take over first and 10 on their own 20 yard line. This is the first play from scrimmage. Kansas comes up over the ball. T formation. Jerry Robertson snug in under the center now. Robertson with the ball, faking the hand-off, keeps it, cracks off right tackle. Goes for a gain of 5 yards. Ron Claire made the stop to make it second down and 5. The Jayhawks have the ball on their own 25 yard line. Charlie Hoag takes it this time over left tackle he goes, gains another 5 yards, and Kansas continues to move. And now we find them, across the midfield stripe picking them up first and 10 on the Kansas State 35 yard line. Charlie Hoag takes the ball again. Blasts his way through the middle of the line. Goes for a gain of 5 yards. Earl Meyer made the tackle and it's second down and 5 on the Kansas State 30. Kansas, in the white jerseys, has the ball. Jerry Robertson, faking the pitch out, keeps it. Tries to get across the right tackle hole gains about 3 yards. Make it third down and 2 yards to go for Kansas. They're on the Kansas State 27 yard line. Then after a 3 yard gain for the first down it's now first and 10. Kansas has the ball and they've worked their way down to the Kansas State 12 yard line. No score in the game as yet but Kansas is knocking on the door. Frank Sabatini taking the delayed hand-off, cracking over the left side of the line, gains 7 yards. Wayne Brown will kick, Gerald Cashman is holding. And the kick is blocked, Merlingus broke through there to block the kick and the ball game remains tied at 6 and 6. There's the kick-off now, going downfield. Brandeberry is waiting for that ball. It drops in a little short. He takes it on the 12, swings to the left. Nice blocking in front of him. Brings it back to the 29 yard line where it will be first and 10 for Kansas on their own 29. Ball game all knotted at 6 and 6 here in the second quarter of play. Kansas State, 6. The Wildcats, expected to be overpowered by the Kansas juggernaut, are proving tough and stubborn rivals here today. Right now we pause to pay tribute this week to Kansas State College. This is Kansas State's Military Science Building. Like all land-grant colleges, Kansas State requires all physically fit male students to take 2 years of military training. This required basic course is offered by units of Army and Air Force ROTC. The biggest recent event on Kansas State's campus was the completion and dedication of it's 2 million dollar field house and gymnasium. Here, the largest crowds ever to witness Big Seven basketball saw a great Wildcat squad perform. Under construction and scheduled for completion late in 1952 is the new West Wing for the Engineering Hall. Kansas State's foundry is equipped to mold and pour brass, aluminum, and gray iron. Here, match plates are used to form the mold cavity in carefully prepared sand. The mold is closed and set firmly on the floor. A jacket supports the sides of the mold against metal pressure. And a weight counteracts the buoyancy of the molten metal. Students are taught to handle molten metal correctly. Aluminum is melted in a cast iron crucible by means of heat furnished by natural gas and is carried to the pouring floor in a sheet steel pouring ladle. Molten metal must be poured carefully and rapidly to prevent the inclusion of air which would cause porosity in the finished castings. After the metal is frozen, the castings are shaken out of the mold and the sand is reclaimed. The aluminum blank that was cast in the college's foundry goes to the machine shop where students get experience in machining. This is the art of shaping by cutting and removing metal. With the shop machines, students cut the teeth on the blanks and turn out finished gears. With such outstanding facilities in its engineering as well as other departments, the campus of Kansas State College is truly the campus of tomorrow. Now back to the second half of this football game. Deadlocked at 6 and 6, Kansas kicks-off to Kansas State. Ball goes deep into Kansas State territory. Veryl Switzer takes it on the 3 yard line. Swings over now to fall in behind his lead blocker, he threads his way back up the field! Finally brought down at the 29 yard line, but the play is being called back. A clipping penalty against Kansas State pushes them back to their own 2 and they go immediately into punt formation with Gerald Cashman back to do the kicking. Cashman gets the kick away, riding it high down the field. No chance for a run back, the ball bounds around the 40 and is grounded on the 42, and Kansas has it. First and 10 on the Kansas State 42 yard line. Hand-off goes to the fullback, Frank Sabatini, he cracks the right side of the line for a 3 yard gain. Ron Claire made the tackle. Another line play, gain of 4. Make it 3rd down and 3 for Kansas on the Kansas State 35 yard line. 3 yards to go for a first down. Charlie Hoag takes the hand-off and blasts his way through for 4 yards. It's a first down for Kansas. Then another play gained 8 yards to bring us to the 23 yard line. Kansas has the ball, second down and 2. Fakes the hand-off, fades back, Paul Leone's the target, there goes the ball, and the pass is complete in the end zone for a touchdown!
