Florence Nightingale Letters
A collection of letters written by Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), housed at the Clendening Library on the KU Medical Center campus. Nightingale is most known for her work during the Crimean War, where she was able to significantly reduce the death rates of soldiers by improving hygiene and living standards. Using her combined knowledge of nursing and statistics, she improved the standards of care for the nursing profession and is often referred to as the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale was also a prolific letter-writer. This collection of her letters from 1854 to 1897 includes topics ranging from simple thank-you notes to multi-page critiques of articles on nursing.
